ENCODED FAITH
A 3D-printed mezuzah that transforms sacred tradition into digital matter, revealing the tension between concealment, transparency, and belief.
This project was the result of an initiative by the Israel Museum that asked designers to look
at the potential of three-dimensional printing technology. I decided to design a mezuzah, a
follow-up to Johannes Gutenberg’s decision to use his printing press first to print a bible.
With the -3D printing I was able to create a homogeneous” material” in which I designed bubbles
which became the blessings that traditionally are on a parchment placed inside the mezuzah.
I made both clear and opaque mezuzahs to show that seeing the blessings is all a matter of belief.
