Curious Presence

A young chameleon, still inexperienced in the art of disappearing, remained on the cool terrazzo floor. There was something vulnerable in its small, exposed presence, and yet it seemed to possess the quiet confidence of a creature convinced it could not be seen. It seemed to be borrowing the pale colors around it, trusting that stillness and resemblance would be enough to make it disappear. Seen closely, its curled body became almost abstract, somewhere between creature and presence. I found myself wondering how far adaptation might go – whether, given enough time, evolution could teach even its eyes to disappear into the world they are watching.
