“The packaging must be planned in such a way so that it can be easily carried up four flights
of stairs, even up a narrow stairwell or spiral staircase.” Said the manager at a knock-down
furniture company as we walked up to a fourth-floor apartment in Paris.
Design of knock-down furniture must take into consideration many restrictions: there must
be as few pieces as possible, the assembly must be easy enough for anyone to do, the
different parts could be manufactured in different countries, etc.
These restrictions became very clear to me in my walk up to the Paris apartment for dinner
when I suddenly realized that such limitations were an excellent opportunity and motivation
for design.
